What is the run down on cloth diapers? By what I'm reading they have certainly come a long way from what I pictured them as (the white diapers with the safety pin). Who has tried them? Who liked them? What do I need to know? My biggest concern is the clean up. I'm not too keen on having poop in my washing machine or going down my drains other than the toilet drain. Words of advice please. (Just for the record: while out running errands or visiting family/friends I would still use disposable - I don't want to have to be carrying around dirty cloths on top of everything else. However, if you were one of those that only used cloth please tell me how you did it). Also if I have any strangers reading this blog, I know I think I'm that cool [it's because I read complete strangers blogs so I think everyone does it :)], please don't be shy.THANKS!
I have a friend who uses cloth diapers and she loves them! She thought it would be totally disgusting, but she says that the poop just falls right off into the toilet pretty easily. For washing you do have to wash them every other day, because you don't want to just let them sit for longer. She also does disposable diapers while going out somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI CD'ed Kai and Sophia, then gave it up when Finn was born. I loved it - just took too much time with 3 kids. If you want to try it, you could start with a set of prefolds (got to get the good stuff, nothing from Babies R US), and covers. I used a covered trash can as a diaper pail, and then washed every couple of days with a few drops of tea tree oil (anti-bac benefits), ran a 2nd rinse and then dried - or hanged outside to dry if possible since the sun does a nice job of bleaching.
ReplyDeleteJulie, Take this from your mother pampers are the way to go! I had to rinse Joe's dirty diapers...no fun especially if you have a weak stomach, and you have to put your water heater way up to get the water hot enough to kill all the bacteria...not worth it...I had four children and not one of you had cloth diapers... cloth take a lot of time however they do make great burp cloth's and dust rags.
ReplyDeleteHey Julie,
ReplyDeleteI obviously don't know anything about it, but I've read posts on both of these blogs about it. That Wife did a whole bunch of research and tried out a whole bunch of different brands, and everything. Just search her blog for "cloth diapers".

Julie,
ReplyDeleteListen to your Mother.....
Julie, you know I love your mom, but she's dead wrong. With the newer washers, you don't have to make sure your water is up to a certain temperature. Just wash on hot, rinse on cold, and add an extra rinse. The only thing is that you really have to keep up on the washing. I left one too long and it smells good when it comes out of the washer, but as soon as a little pee gets in it, it immediately smells like a lot of old pee. The pros for us have been less diaper rash and faster healing when they do get a rash, less impact on the environment (well, a little less, since I do disposables about half the time), comfier baby, and (as silly as this is), just a general fun-ness about it. Go check out bumgenius.com. Their cloth diapers are created to operate like disposables, except you don't throw them away. Also, you could check out EC or infant potty training, which sounded absolutely crazy to me at first, but now that I've been through potty training a difficult toddler, I will definitely be considering that route. Anyway, have fun!! Or...as fun as diapering can be, anyway.
