Although shots were fired at Fort Sumter in South Carolina first, I don't think you could classify it as a battle. The first official battle would be at Bull Run in Virginia. (the South won)
Dad's comments, I hope Brad is enjoying the lovely palmetto stete of South Carolina. Fort Sumter featured a full day's cannonade with significant damage to the fort and ignited the four year conflict. It provided the litmus test to color everything else that followed. I hope my guess placed Brad in the right place.
Fort Sumter was the site of the first battle of the Civil War.
According to Don't Know Much About The Civil War, by Kenneth C. Davis, Fort Sumter was, indeed, the the battle that began the war. The Battle of 1st Bull Run (or 1st Manassas) did not occur until July 21, 1861.
Not only was First Manassas (aka First Bull Run) '''NOT''' the first battle of the Civil War, ''it wasn't even one of the first ten''! It was, however, the first MAJOR battle.
